Snap on 2&4: Monica Ramey w/ the Beegie Adair Trio
Friday, September 9
8:00pm
The Jazz Cave
Nashville Jazz Workshop, 1319 Adams Street
For the September 9 Snap on 2&4 presentation, NJW is pleased to welcome to the Jazz Cave Monica Ramey with the Beegie Adair Trio.
About Monica Ramey:
“Monica Ramey gives me the feeling that I can make it through any obstacle in life. Her music encompasses love, joy, sadness, hope, and humor. These are qualities that most artists strive for in their music, but few achieve. Monica presents the human experience, in such a beautiful way. Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to Monica Ramey. “
-Rod McGaha, Jazz Trumpeter
Monica is a native of Francesville, one of Indiana’s smallest town. By the age of 11, she had become well known in Indiana after starring in several local and professional Broadway musical productions. As a teenager, she studied at the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, and in 1995, Monica was selected to become one of only 12 singers nationally to be a member of the GRAMMY National All American High School Jazz Band and Choir. Monica later studied Music Performance at Indiana State University and was a member of the ISU Jazz Singers. She also interned for the NARAS Foundation in Los Angeles, where the preservation of jazz music became a focal point of her responsibilities.
In 2000, she moved to Nashville to pursue her singing career, where she discovered the Nashville Jazz Workshop, giving her the opportunity to study under some of Nashville's finest musicians. Her debut album Make Someone Happy is receiving international airplay on jazz radio, Pandora, Music Choice and DMX to name a few.
About Beegie Adair:
Jazz great Helen Merrill salutes her “inventive jazz sense, her wonderful sense of time and improvised melody.” Michael Feinstein calls her “a marvelously understated player whose interpretations of standards are just brilliant," Christopher Louden of Jazz Times magazine says Adair is “an accomplished artist with a delicate touch.” The Los Angeles Times calls her music “Elegant.” Entertainment News writes, “Beegie Adair is one of the finest piano players in the world.”
Jazz fans around the world agree with critics about Adair’s sophisticated and listenable jazz performances, and have made her recordings among the biggest sellers in the jazz world.
A mainstay of the Nashvile jazz scene, Adair has recorded over 30 CDs (29 of which are recorded with her trio). She hosted her own radio show, Improvised Thoughts, in the late 80's and has been featured twice on Marion McPartland's Piano Jazz. In 2002, Beegie joined one of the most exclusive rosters in the world when she became a Steinway Artist. An honor only bestowed upon 1,600 pianists in the world including Lang Lang, Diana Krall, Harry Connick, Jr., Michael Legrand, Billy Joel and the "immortals" like Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Arthur Rubinstein.
She and her trio continue to play in jazz clubs and festivals around the world and was the top selling jazz artist in Japan in 2010. In January, Beegie received a very warm welcome from her fans in New York, making her debut appearance at Birdland, with Monica Ramey. The trio for this performance will include bassist Roger Spencer and drummer Marcus Finnie.
Tickets for this special Snap on 2&4 will go on sale Monday, September 5 at 10am by phone at 242-5299. Admission is $20 / $10 for college and High school students with ID. There will be two sets, starting at 8pm.

NJW Presents: Don Aliquo's "Sun & Shield" CD Release Party
Don Aliquo CD release party
Sunday, May 22
3:00pm
The Jazz Cave
Nashville Jazz Workshop, 1319 Adams Street
NJW is pleased to host saxophonist Don Aliquo's CD release party for his new release Sun and Shield, on Sunday, May 22, from 3-5pm in the Jazz Cave.
Aliquo's 5th solo release is a New York based affair, featuring veteran jazz masters Rufus Reid (bass) Jim McNeely (piano) and the dynamic Obed Calvaire (drums). Recorded in Englewood, New Jersey in June 2010, the CD showcases Aliquo’s sparkling and thoughtful compositions as well as pieces contributed by veteran composers Reid and McNeely. It also debuts Don’s work as a jazz clarinetist, an often overlooked solo instrument with deep jazz roots. The recording presents the consistently brilliant Reid and McNeely, but also showcases the young Obed Calvaire, whose spirited and creative playing is often a rhythmic catalyst for Aliquo. "This project was a thrill to record from the first note. Having the opportunity to play with two of my musical heroes in Reid and McNeely and "musically sparring" with the powerful Obed Calvaire is an experience I will never forget!” states Aliquo.
Don is currently the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at Middle Tennessee State University near Nashville. He has performed in concerts and/or recordings with Gary Burton, Greg Osby, Rufus Reid, Pete Christlieb, Scott Robinson, Jeff Coffin and Marvin Stamm to name a few. Aliquo is also an in-demand clinician, presenting concerts and clinics throughout the United States and is honored to represent Vandoren (reeds and mouthpieces) and P.Mauriat (saxophones).

Jazz Pianist Beegie Adair with Vocalist Monica Ramey at Birdland
Monica Ramey (vocals) Beegie Adair (piano)
Thursday, January 13, 6:00 p.m.
Music Charge: $20
Monica Ramey album "Make Someone Happy" is receiving nationwide airplay on jazz radio, including Music Choice and DMX, she makes her New York City debut at Birdland with special guest the legendary Beegie Adair, who Michael Feinstein called "a marvelously understated player whose interpretations of standards are just brilliant," jazz grea...t Helen Merrill salutes her "inventive jazz sense, her wonderful sense of time and improvised melody," and The Los Angeles Times calls her music "Elegant," Entertainment News writes, "Beegie Adair is one of the finest piano players in the world."
Now that the trend of aging rockers cutting albums of show tunes and standards seems thankfully to have run its course, we're back to vocalists with a real feel for and understanding of the jazz tradition doing them justice. Nashville's Monica Ramey is a shining example. Her excellent release "Make Someone Happy" offers resourceful, soaring and engaging interpretations of material from The Great American Songbook. Ron Wynn - Nashville Scene
On her debut CD, Nashville singer Monica Ramey displays a velvety voice on a handful of choice tunes including infrequently heard ones like “Dream Dancing,” “You Hit the Spot,” “Passion Flower” and “Give Him the Ooh-la-la.” But the award winner was the opener, a Blossom Dearie tune called “Hey, John.” Carmen McRae’s version of it was a wake up call from the past, but Ramey comes darn close.
George Fendel - Jazz Society of Oregon
Her theatrical roots combine with her obvious deep affection for the classic popular song to give us a freshly unique take on the material she's chosen for her debut. It's sassy, swinging and totally enjoyable.

I may be obsessed...
....with www.monicaramey.com right now. The "people watching" is fantastic. I watch the traffic reports and read the very sweet messages people are leaving me and it sometimes is too overwhelming. AND we're just getting started, kids!
Facebook, Twitter and Myspace are all really fantastic ways to reconnect, but when someone voluntarily steps into your own world...a world you share with no one else like your own website...it's an incredibly humbling and gratifying feeling. Until Make Someone Happy hit the press, I didn't do much to promote the website, but that all has changed.
Take a look for yourself. Leave a message, join the list, listen to the clips and yes, check out the amazing new album photos. Seriously folks, if there is a great photo of me, I'm claiming it and telling the world about it!
Have a wonderful night. Time to meditate and rest....
