Beegie Adair featuring Monica Ramey at Birdland

Beegie Adair featuring Monica Ramey
Thursday, Oct. 3, 6:00 p.m.
Music Charge: $35

"The pairing of Beegie and Monica is a master class on how to interpret timeless songs with style, taste and a swinging contemporary sensibility.”
– Michael Feinstein

“Monica’s exquisite vocal performance with Beegie's elegant piano style is a match made in heaven.” – Lori Mechem

“It's obvious, when you listen, that they have a simpatico personal and professional relationship.” – Jeff Coffin

The legendary Beegie Adair will be returning to Birdland with vocalist Monica Ramey. Their performances, as a duo and with the renowned Beegie Adair Trio, have consistently energized sold out audiences. Adair's albums have dominated the jazz charts and album sales while Ramey's sophomore album, produced by Adair and bassist Roger Spencer, are creating a reinvigorated excitement among the jazz world. Ms. Adair and Ms. Ramey are thrilled to return to Birdland for a special “One Night Only” duo performance.

Jazz great Helen Merrill salutes Adair’s “inventive jazz sense, her wonderful sense of time and improvised melody.” Michael Feinstein calls Adair “a marvelously understated player whose interpretations of standards are just brilliant," Christopher Louden of Jazz Times magazine says she is “an accomplished artist with a delicate touch.” The Los Angeles Times calls her music “Elegant.” Entertainment News writes, “Beegie Adair is one of the finest piano players in the world.”

Jazz fans around the world agree with critics about Adair’s sophisticated and listenable jazz performances, and have made her recordings among the biggest sellers in the jazz world. Under the guidance of her esteemed mentor and friend, Ramey is quickly catching the attention of jazz fans, critics and musicians.

Guitarist Anthony Wilson declares Ramey “sings with grace and elegance” and “uses these abilities to deliver the world of the song first to your ears (sometimes it’s like she’s singing directly to you), then to a much deeper place where you can really feel it.” The Nashville Scene calls her “a first-rate interpreter of the jazz canon.” Pianist Chris Walters finds Ramey’s music “a miracle – at times controlled and concise, at others, fervent and daring, all the while abundant with wisdom” all while drummer Marcus Finnie states "Monica is truly an "Artist." Her interpretation and phrasing of these works are moving and beautiful."

Doors open for a special meet and greet with the artists at 5pm. For reservations and more information, please visit www.ticketfly.com or www.birdlandjazz.com.

Beegie Adair, who Michael Feinstein called "a marvelously understated player whose interpretations of standards are just brilliant," jazz great Helen Merrill salutes her "inventive jazz sense, her wonderful sense of time and improvised melody," and The Los Angeles Times calls her music "Elegant," will be returning to Birdland with vocalist Monica Ramey.  In 2011, their performances, as a duo and with the renowned Beegie Adair Trio, have consistently energized sold out audiences.  Adair's albums have dominated the jazz charts and album sales in Japan in 2010 and 2011 while Ramey's debut album "Make Someone Happy" continues to receive international accolade and airplay on jazz radio, including Music Choice and DMX.

Now that the trend of aging rockers cutting albums of show tunes and standards seems thankfully to have run its course, we're back to vocalists with a real feel for and understanding of the jazz tradition doing them justice. Nashville's Monica Ramey is a shining example. Her excellent release "Make Someone Happy" offers resourceful, soaring and engaging interpretations of material from The Great American Songbook.
Ron Wynn - Nashville Scene

Her theatrical roots combine with her obvious deep affection for the classic popular song to give us a freshly unique take on the material she's chosen for her debut.  It's sassy, swinging and totally enjoyable.

Friends,

I never utilize this blog except for gigs, but I thought it may be fun to share some of the great things I do within and outside of the music world. For instance, I just saw Kenny Barron on Friday & Saturday night at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. It's not often that you get to see a jazz legend in such an intimate setting. It was incredible!

Maybe it's the holidays or perhaps I'm still growing up a bit, but I feel so thankful for the opportunities I have. As I grow musically and have the opportunity to share my experiences with others, I think the fascination will be as much about my musical experience as will be be about my musical talent. They really go hand in hand. I am who I am, musically, because of all that I've seen and experienced. I am who I am, personally, for the same reason. It's incredible.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and you can be with or speak with someone that matters to you on Thursday. Take care, Monica
